Its only a movie:Does censorship really protect us?

The issue of censorship came up for me the other night while i was watching Cannibal Ferox with some friends. While we watched the movie it came to a point where the captives are about to be eaten by the cannibal tribe -at least i think thats what happened, i wouldnt know, as that scene was cut out, making the rest of the film make no sense. We have no clue what had happened -all we knew was it cant have been pretty and thanks to be bbfc, we'd missed out.

Do we really need such movies to be butchered? Seeing these movies 25 years after their banning order, we do have to wonder why these were viewed with disdain and outright disgust by the critics. Would we all turn into gibbering monsters if we veiwed these movies in their full bloody glory?

The video nasty act wasnt the 'greatest attack on free speech ever,' but one of 'the greatest publicity events of the 80s'. These movies continue to survive because of censor cuts, and some movies have wrongly obtained a mythical legendary status because they were banned, only meaning we wanted to get hold of these movies all the more because we werent supposed to be viewing them. Looking at the films thta grace our cinemas and dvd players nowadays, saw as the Saws and the Hostels, is there anything that was shown back then that these movies are showing now that are any different? The 'too extreme for cinema' cuts of films we receive on dvd are more marketing ploys rather than any attempt at censorship.

The wii game 'Manhunt 2' was banned last year until game developer Rockstar toned down the killings, but after 5 minutes of going through the death sequences, your left with a game that has poor controls and little replay value.

Censorship is supposed to 'protect' the public from devient artists -but shouldnt we have the choice over whether to view said entertainment for ourselves? Rather than cutting films to the point of being left with a unitelligible film because of the cuts. To take a quote from the marketing campaign of banned film 'Last house on the left': 'Its only a movie'.
